From Amherst Resident  Robert 'Bob' Romer:
Gettysburg and Vicksburg were not the only significant battles that were fought during the month of July, 1863.  Exactly 150 years ago this Thursday, on July 18, 1863, Union forces, headed by the Massachusetts 54th Infantry, attacked Fort Wagner in Charleston harbor.  Though a Union defeat, that battle, in its own way, has had a lasting effect on American history.  And four of the soldiers who fought that night lived all or part of their lives in Amherst.  One of those Amherst soldiers, Sanford Jackson, was mortally wounded that night and is now buried in a military cemetery in Beaufort, SC.
