A dramatic presentation of the meaning and circumstances of the assassinations of MLK, as well as Malcolm X, JFK and RFK
During the 1960’s, Martin Luther King was the most powerful moral authority in the country. As he enlarged his nonviolent activism against racial segregation in order to articulate the seamless relationship between militarism, poverty, and racism, to campaign for an end to the Vietnam War, and to design a Poor People’s campaign, he threatened the status quo and was marked for assassination. In this play we see MLK in his fullness as a universal prophet and champion in the perennial struggle for peace, justice, and human rights. Using historically accurate statements, the dramatic reading illuminates the motivations of the public figures involved in the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK, and Malcolm X by the national security state. The compelling visions of these 4 leaders for a just and peaceful world threatened powerful economic/political interests and the achievement of global American hegemony. The intention of the play is to challenge the silence that for decades has surrounded these “unspeakable” assassinations, and to shed light on the “unspeakables” of today.
Presentation to be followed by discussion.
